Time Required, Complexity and Extra-ness are based on a 1 (least) – 5 (most) scale. A note that “Extra” doesn’t equal difficult—things can be surprisingly simple but not at all basic.

Last Word, a cocktail consisting of equal parts gin, Luxardo Maraschino, Green Chartreuse, and fresh lime, is one of those cocktails that always speaks to me when I see it on a menu. I love most things gin and it’s a flawlessly bright and refreshing beverage. Last of the Oaxacans is a delightful riff on the Last Word which swaps out bright and floral gin for smokey and moody mezcal. It retains all the bright notes of the original, but adds in another layer of fascination and complexity.

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 ounce mezcal
  • 3/4 ounce Green Chartreuse
  • 3/4 ounce Luxardo Maraschino
  • 3/4 fresh squeezed lime juice
  • Thin slice of lime for garnish (optional

Instructions:

Fill a cocktail shaker two-thirds full with ice. Add mezcal, Green Chartreuse, Luxardo Maraschino, and lime juice. Shake for 30 seconds and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with lime.

Notes:

  • This cocktail is easily scalable due to the simplicity of the ratios. If making in advance, add lime juice close to serving.
